Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey (MP), Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Intergration led a five-member high level delegation to deliver a special message of gratitude from H.E. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to his Ivorian counterpart, H.E. Alassane Dramane Ouattara for his gracious acceptance and presence as the guest of honour at President Akufo-Addo’s inauguration on 7th January, 2017.
Other members of the delegation included Hon. Cecilia Dapaah, Minister for Aviation and Hon. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Minister of Information.
The Hon. Foreign Minister indicated that the gesture was highly appreciated by all Ghanaians, and acknowledged that it was a reflection of the value President Ouattara attached to the unique fraternal bond between the peoples of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.
H.E. President Ouattara responded by indicating that he owed it a duty to the people of Ghana to attend the event, emphasizing that Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire were indeed one country divided by incidents of history. He continued to explain that the time was ripe for the two countries to take their relationship to greater heights for the benefit of not only their peoples but for the Sub-region as a whole. President Ouattara further noted that there were several avenues through which both Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire could intensify their bilateral cooperation, including the Cocoa Industry, enhanced Trade, Regional and International Diplomacy.
He encouraged the Hon. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Intergration of Ghana and her Ivorian counterpart to accerlerate preparations to hold the next Permanent Joint Commission of Coorperation (PJCC) to actualize the dreams, aspirations and policies of the two countries. President Ouattara also took the opportunity to invite his brother and counterpart, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to pay a reciprocal visit to Côte d’Ivoire.
He expressed his pleasure at the election of Ambassador Thomas Kwesi Quartey, Ghana’s candidate to the post of Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).
