COMMISSIONING OF THE CHANCERY OF EMBASSY OF GHANA IN ADDIS ABABA

On Monday, 16th February, 2026, the President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama commissioned the newly built Chancery of the Embassy of Ghana in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The project forms part of the Strategic Transitioning from Rental to Infrastructure Development (STRIDE) initiative by Government, aimed at reducing expenditure on rent and strengthening Ghana’s diplomatic infrastructure abroad.

In his remarks, His Excellency recalled the historic relations between Ghana and Ethiopia and the shared legacy as founding members of the former Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU). He indicated that given the strategic importance of Addis Ababa as the host of the continental body, it was imperative for Ghana to have a permanent and befitting Chancery to advance its bilateral relations with Ethiopia and multilateral engagement at the African Union. He acknowledged the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, His Excellency Abiy Ahmed Ali (PhD) for the infrastructural development which has transform the landscape of Addis Ababa. His Excellency the President also expressed gratitude to the technical team for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring the completion of the project.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP) described the commissioning of the Chancery in Addis Ababa as a major milestone in the relations between Ghana and Ethiopia and a strong demonstration of the commitment of Ghana to continental diplomacy. He noted that the initiative was conceived during the first term of His Excellency the President. The Minister stated that the construction of a permanent structure in Addis Ababa is an indication of Ghana’s continuous commitment to enhance its ties with Ethiopia at the bilateral level and commitment to multilateralism.

On his part, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, His Excellency Gedion Timothewos (PhD) reiterated that the commissioning of the new Chancery in Addis Ababa shows the determination of Ghana to deepen bilateral relations with Ethiopia and advance continental objectives within the African Union framework. The Minister expressed confidence that the Chancery would enhance Ghana’s diplomatic engagement and serve as a symbol of continued cooperation, while upholding the Pan-African legacy of the continent’s founding leaders.

Present at the event were Senior Government Officials, members of the Diplomatic Corps in Addis Ababa, members of the Ghanaian Community in Ethiopia, among others.
