DEPUTY MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS MEETS CANADA’S DEPUTY MINISTER OF IMMIGRATION

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP) held a bilateral meeting with the Deputy Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada, Dr. Harpreet S. Kochhar on Tuesday, 13th January, 2026. The discussions focused on matters relating to immigration, migration management and bilateral cooperation emphasising the relevance of Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

Honourable Quayson lauded the longstanding cordial relations between Ghana and Canada and expressed the need to further deepen the cooperation for mutual benefits. He stated that the provision of legal pathways for migration is necessary to avert the perils associated with irregular migration. Highlighting the skill set of the youth in Ghana, the Deputy Minister stated that the two countries could consider Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Labour Mobility to address the challenge of irregular migration. In addition, the Deputy Minister assured of Ghana’s readiness to work closely with Canada to ensure smooth immigration processes for Ghanaian nationals who would be travelling to Canada for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

On his part, Dr. Harpreet S. Kochhar outlined Canada’s concerns regarding irregular migration. This notwithstanding, he reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and well-coordinated immigration process for the FIFA World Cup 2026, in close cooperation with the Government of Ghana. He further expressed Canada’s openness to deepening bilateral cooperation with Ghana across various sectors.

Present at the meeting was the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Mr. Samuel Basintale Amadu.
