On Thursday, March 8, 2018, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, signed a grant agreement and exchanged documents between the Japanese Embassy in Ghana and Ghana Broadcasting Cooperation (GBC). The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Minister of Information Hon. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid. The total Grant of Nine Hundred and Forty Three Thousand, Four Hundred and Sixty One Dollars ($943,461) which was presented to Ghana was meant for five (5) beneficiary entities, including (GBC) and four (4) communities in the Greater Accra, Volta, Upper West and Western Regions. Out of the total, the GBC received Six Hundred Thousand Dollars ($600,000) to use for the improvement of equipment for quality production and transmission of programmes.
The Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tsutomu Himeno, described the relationship between Ghana and Japan as cordial and Japan as “a true and loyal friend of Ghana”. He further indicated that Japan had supported Ghana in various sectors such as education, health, infrastructure, among others, through its grant assistance projects.
The Foreign Minister expressed profound appreciation to Japan for the kind gesture and pledged the Government’s commitment to utilise the grant for its intended purpose for the benefit of Ghanaians.
