MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS SPEAKS ON SOLAR RADIATION MANAGEMENT AT PARIS PEACE FORUM

On 29th October, 2025, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP), participated in a panel discussion at the 2025 Paris Peace Forum on the theme “Solar Radiation Management (SRM) and Development: Estimating the Upside, Confronting the Limits.”

The session brought together key global experts, including the Vice-President of the Paris Peace Forum, Mr. Pascal Lamy; Senior Editor at The Economist, Mr. Oliver Morton; and Professor Michael Obersteiner, Director of the Environmental Change Institute at the University of Oxford. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Ana Yang, Director of the Environment and Society Centre at Chatham House.

The Honourable Minister in his submission examined the implications of SRM for developing countries in the Global South, highlighting questions of equity, capacity, and regional impact. He noted that while the technology presents potential benefits for low-latitude economies, it also raises governance and ethical concerns that must be addressed collectively.

The panel further discussed the science and technology behind SRM, ongoing research efforts, and the need for inclusive policymaking in addressing climate change. The Honourable Minister emphasized that outcomes from such deliberations should inform the work of multilateral institutions and guide future global climate policy.
