The Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Africa of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Mr. Bukar Tijani paid a farewell call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.
In her welcome remarks, Hon. Ayorkor Botchwey commended Mr. Bukar Tijani for the work he had done in Ghana for the past five years. She indicated that the FAO had over the years played an important role in Ghana’s development.
She stated that the government’s initiative on “Planting for Food and Jobs”, is bearing fruits and added that the “One district One warehouse” initiative would soon be implemented to help address the problem of post harvest loses by farmers.
She reiterated the need to modernize agriculture to help attract young people into the sector, and called on the FAO to continue providing its technical support for farmers to make farming more attractive to young people.
The Minister used the occasion to wish Mr. Bukar Tijani well in his future endeaovour and pledged that the Ministry would continue to support the work of the FAO.
Mr. Bukar Tijani thanked the country for the support he had received during his 5 years tenure and commended the government for the initiatives which have been put in place to promote food security in the country.
He added that a lot more had to be done to support the “Planting for Food and Jobs”, “One village One dam” and the “One district One factory” initiatives. He said the FAO had supported farmers to deal with the fall army worms which affected some farms in the country. He also acknowledged that the 2018 World Food Day celebration in Ghana which was held in Nsawam in the Eastern Region was very successful.
