At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Ghana and African Union Champion on Advancing the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the President of the Republic of Senegal, His Excellency Mr. Bassirou Diomaye Faye participated in the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps to the Landmark United Nations Resolution on the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans held in Accra, Ghana.
In his address, President Faye expressed the commitment of Senegal in advancing reparatory justice and promoting stronger ties between Africa and its diaspora. He stated that the adoption of the UN resolution is a major step forward for universal consciousness, noting that for the first time the international community had recognized with clarity the magnitude of the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade and racial slavery. He said that reparatory justice should be perceived as an instrument for building a just, balanced and equitable international order. He argued that reparations should encompass among others, recognition of historical truths, restoration of dignity, restitution of cultural heritage, promotion of education and research and stronger links between Africa and its diaspora. He called for engagement among all stakeholders committed to advancing reparatory justice to avert duplication of effort.
