HER EXCELLENCY DR. NETUMBO NANDI-NDAITWAH PARTICIPATES IN THE HIGH-LEVEL CONSULTATIVE CONFERENCE ON NEXT STEPS TO THE LANDMARK UN RESOLUTION ON THE TRAFFICKING OF ENSLAVED AFRICANS

The President of the Republic of Namibia, Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on 18th June, 2026 addressed the High-Level Consultative Conference on Next Steps to the Landmark UN Resolution on the Trafficking on Enslaved Africans. She described the Consultative Conference as an important milestone in transforming the United Nations Resolution A/RES/80/250 into action and reflected on the enduring consequences of the transatlantic slave trade, as well as the painful legacy carried by generations of Africans and People of African descent. Highlighting Ghana’s historical significance and its leadership role in the pursuit of reparatory justice, Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah noted that the forts and castles in the country are reminders of the suffering endured by millions of Africans and at the same time symbolizes resilience, resistance and hope.

Drawing on Namibia’s own experience in seeking justice for the genocide committed against the Ovaherero and Nama People, she emphasized that reconciliation can only be achieved through truth, acknowledgement, dialogue and mutual respect. She said that the pursuit of justice is often slow and complex but expressed optimism that through sustained engagement reparatory justice would be achieved. She further stressed the importance of African unity and solidarity, noting that the African diaspora remains an integral part of the future of the continent. She called for greater efforts to address all aspects of the legacy of slavery and colonialism and urged Africans to continue reclaiming their history, confidence and identity.
