SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE COMMUNITY OF DEMOCRACIES PAYS COURTESY CALL ON THE DEPUTY MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS

On Wednesday, 25th February, 2026 the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Dr. Mantas Adom?nas paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson.

The Deputy Minister noted that democracy is increasingly being tested both globally and within the sub-region. Notwithstanding the challenges, he stated that Ghana has sustained its democratic credentials over the years in a complex regional environment. He further emphasised the need to involve and empower the youth in governance and decision-making processes to ensure its sustainability in Africa.

The Secretary General expressed appreciation to the Deputy Minister for the audience and provided an overview of the Community of Democracies, noting that it was established about twenty-five years ago following the signing of the Warsaw Declaration to promote and strengthen democratic governance. He observed with concern the growing backsliding of democratic principles worldwide and stressed the need to renew the democratic narrative to address emerging challenges such as disinformation and misinformation. He further highlighted the importance of electoral integrity, inclusiveness within multilateral organisations, and the need to adapt democratic governance to contemporary global realities. He also highlighted the importance of women’s empowerment in strengthening democratic systems.

Dr. Adom?nas also underscored the Community’s interest in deepening cooperation with Ghana, which he described as a beacon of democracy.

The meeting concluded with assurances from both sides to strengthen collaboration in promoting democratic governance.
