GOVERNMENT OF GHANA HANDS OVER RECONSTRUCTED BUILDING TO NIGERIA HIGH COMMISSION

In a significant gesture aimed at strengthening the strong diplomatic and fraternal relations between Ghana and Nigeria, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, handed over a newly reconstructed one-story building to the Nigeria High Commission in Accra at a ceremony held on 20th November, 2024.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Director for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Amb. Ramses J. Cleland, emphasized the significance of the handing over and highlighted that the reconstruction of the building, which followed the unfortunate demolition of the previous building in 2020, symbolises Ghana’s unwavering commitment to enhancing bilateral ties with Nigeria.

The newly reconstructed one storey – four apartments – building, complete with state-of-the-art amenities is billed to serve as a symbol of stoic cooperation between Ghana and Nigeria.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar in an address read on his behalf by the Director of the Foreign Service Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Amb. Chimeze Ogu, recalled the strong historical, cultural and economic ties between the two sister countries. He praised Ghana for her exceptional efforts, describing the handover as “a remarkable day in the history of Ghana-Nigeria relations”. He expressed his gratitude for Ghana’s response to the unfortunate demolition incident and the swift restoration of the Nigeria Mission’s property which has helped to further strengthen the relations between the two countries.
Amb. Tuggar further underscored the importance of continuing the joint efforts between Ghana and Nigeria, particularly in the quest for Africa’s permanent representation on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Reflecting on the longstanding diplomatic relations between the two nations, he noted the historical partnership in the fight for decolonisation and against apartheid. He reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to working closely with Ghana to advance shared objectives on the global stage. He also congratulated Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, on her election as the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. He recognised her hard work and service to both Ghana and the international community.

On behalf of the Government of Ghana, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey offered sincere apologies for the unfortunate incident that led to the demolition of the previous building and emphasised that it did not reflect the views of the Ghanaian people regarding the rule of law and international protocols. She assured the Nigerian delegation that the strength of Ghana-Nigeria relations remains unwavering. She noted that the principle of mutual respect that underpins the bond would continue to guide the journey of both nations.
The Minister also took the opportunity to advise all diplomatic Missions resident in Ghana to ensure that their land documents are regularly updated and registered, a matter that was raised in the aftermath of demolition incident. Hon. Botchwey further expressed Ghana’s gratitude to the Nigerian Government for assisting it to acquire the necessary documents for its property in Abuja, an action that further demonstrates the mutual respect and collaboration between the two nations.
The event concluded with a warm exchange of words and statements of appreciation, with both sides acknowledging the importance of continued partnership and mutual respect.

The reconstructed building is now a testament to the enduring friendship between Ghana and Nigeria, and the shared commitment to advancing peace, stability, and prosperity between the two countries.
