MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF GHANA RECEIVES MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND FOREIGN TRADE OF JAMAICA

On Monday, 25th May, 2026 the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, JP paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (MP).

During his interaction with his Jamaican counterpart, Honourable Ablakwa reiterated his gratitude to the Government of Jamaica for the warm reception extended to him during his visit at the time the Engineers’ regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces was deployed to assist with reconstruction efforts after the devastation of hurricane Melissa. He also thanked Jamaica for voting in favour of UN Resolution A/RES/80/250 on 25th March, 2026 and apprised her of the High-Level Consultative Conference on the Next Steps of the Landmark Resolution on Slavery to be held from 17th to 19th June, 2026 aimed at working toward a common global framework for the pursuit of reparatory justice. He recalled the historical relations between Ghana and Jamaica and stated the need to renew cooperation in areas with existing bilateral agreements while exploring new avenues for the mutual benefit of the peoples of the two countries.

On her part, Honourable Smith commended Ghana for its leadership role and diplomatic efforts which led to the adoption of the resolution and advancing the global conversation on historical injustices. She gave an update of the efforts being made by Jamaica in respect of reparatory justice and assured of her country’s continuous support. She lauded the Engineers’ regiment of Ghana Armed Forces for the camaraderie demonstrated in working with their Jamaican counterparts during the period of the reconstruction. She assured of the commitment of Jamaica to closely collaborate with Ghana in areas beneficial to both countries.
